Vampalloy PC/ABS Compounds

Vampalloy is a range of flame-retardant PC/ABS alloy compounds manufactured by VAMP TECH Spa and supplied to the UK market by Abbey Polymers. These polycarbonate and ABS blends combine the impact strength and heat resistance of polycarbonate with the processability and surface finish of ABS, creating a versatile engineering material for demanding applications. All Vampalloy grades are halogen-free and formulated to deliver excellent flame retardancy alongside very good aesthetics and low smoke density, making them a strong choice for visible, safety-critical components.

Abbey Polymers stocks and supplies the Vampalloy range, providing UK manufacturers with reliable access to high-quality PC/ABS compounds backed by expert technical support.

Why PC/ABS Alloys

PC/ABS blends offer a unique combination of properties that neither polycarbonate nor ABS can achieve alone. The polycarbonate component provides high impact strength, good heat resistance, and dimensional stability, while the ABS component contributes improved flow characteristics, easier processing, and a high-quality surface finish. This balance of properties makes PC/ABS alloys particularly well suited to applications where both performance and appearance are important.

Vampalloy compounds build on these inherent advantages by incorporating advanced halogen-free flame-retardant systems that deliver UL 94 V0 classification while maintaining the material’s natural strengths. The result is a range of compounds that offer flame retardancy, excellent aesthetics, and reliable mechanical performance in a single material.

The Vampalloy Product Range

The Vampalloy range includes several grades, each engineered to suit different application requirements. All grades are unfilled PC/ABS alloys with halogen-free (bromine and chlorine free) flame-retardant systems and are designed for injection moulding. The grades differ primarily in their flow characteristics, chemical resistance, and thermal properties, allowing manufacturers to select the most appropriate compound for their specific application. Key characteristics across the Vampalloy range include:
  • UL 94 V0 Classification: All Vampalloy grades achieve V0, with selected grades certified at thicknesses as low as 0.8 mm.
  • Very Good Surface Appearance: The PC/ABS blend delivers a high-quality surface finish straight from the mould, reducing or eliminating the need for secondary finishing operations such as painting or coating.
  • Low Smoke Density and Toxicity: Vampalloy compounds are formulated to produce low levels of smoke with reduced toxicity in the event of fire, an important consideration for enclosed environments such as public transport and building interiors.
  • Variable Flow and Chemical Resistance: Grades are available with different flow and chemical resistance profiles, from high-flow options for complex thin-wall mouldings through to grades with enhanced chemical resistance for more demanding service environments.
Extrusion grades are also available for the production of smooth pipes, cable canals, and profiles.

Features & Benefits of Vampalloy Compounds

  • Fully Halogen-Free: All Vampalloy grades are bromine and chlorine free, meeting the growing demand from OEMs and end users for halogen-free materials in electrical, electronic, and building applications.
  • Excellent Aesthetics: The inherent surface quality of PC/ABS, combined with good colourability, makes Vampalloy suitable for visible components where appearance is a priority.
  • Strong Mechanical Performance: PC/ABS alloys offer high impact strength and good rigidity, providing reliable structural performance across a range of operating temperatures.
  • Low Smoke Output: Low smoke density and toxicity ratings make Vampalloy compounds suitable for use in enclosed and occupied spaces, supporting compliance with fire safety standards for public transport and buildings.
  • Extensive Certifications: Vampalloy grades carry UL Yellow Card certifications and selected grades comply with EN 45545 for rail applications and French M1 fire classification for building interiors, reducing the time and cost associated with material qualification.
  • REACH and RoHS Compliance: All Vampalloy formulations meet current REACH and RoHS requirements.
  • Injection Moulding and Extrusion: While the core range is designed for injection moulding, dedicated extrusion grades are available for pipe, canal, and profile applications.

Typical Applications for Vampalloy Compounds

Vampalloy PC/ABS compounds are used across industries where flame retardancy, visual quality, and reliable mechanical performance are required. Typical applications include:
  • Electrical and Electronics: Housings, enclosures, and covers for electrical distribution equipment, switches, and consumer electronics where flame retardancy and surface finish are both essential.
  • Lighting: Housings and diffuser frames for commercial and domestic light fittings, where halogen-free flame retardancy, heat resistance, and good aesthetics are required.
  • Home Automation: Enclosures and faceplates for smart home devices, control panels, and sensor housings where a high-quality finish and flame-retardant performance are expected.
  • Rail and Public Transport: Interior trim, panelling, and component housings for rolling stock and public transport vehicles, with EN 45545-compliant grades offering low smoke density and toxicity.
  • Construction: Cable management systems, trunking, and interior fittings for commercial and public buildings, with French M1 certified grades available for building interior applications.
